Legendary Ghanaian Gospel musician Maame Tiwaa has died.
Maame Tiwaa, a figure whose voice was synonymous with the success of the iconic Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo band, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025.
She had been sick for a couple of weeks.
Confirming the news to Nydjlive.com, long-time manager Ashis described Maame Tiwaa as a “true representation of loyalty”.
“I’ve never seen anyone as loyal as Maame Tiwaa. She was a true representation of loyalty. Even when the world was against her, she stood by Yaw Sarpong and gave her all. We’ll miss her,” he said.
For over four decades, Maame Tiwaa stood as a cornerstone of the Asomafo group. Her powerful, distinctive, and emotionally resonant vocals were the perfect complement to Yaw Sarpong’s songwriting, helping to create some of the most enduring and spiritually uplifting songs in the history of Ghanaian Gospel music.
Her long-standing loyalty and collaboration with Yaw Sarpong, which spanned almost her entire career, solidified her status as a true veteran of the craft. She was often celebrated not just as a collaborator but as a pillar of the group, with her over 40-year contribution to the industry being recently recognized with her first major nomination, a testament to her timeless impact.
Born in Domeabra Ahafo, Maame Tiwaa began her musical journey at the tender age of 10, before being discovered by Reverend Yaw Sarpong to form the Asomafo Band. Her commitment was so absolute that she was often praised for her unwavering loyalty to the bandleader. Her passing brings an era of classic, high-quality live-band gospel music to a close.
