“Celebrity Means Nothing, Legacy Is Everything” – Sway Dasafo’s Posthumous Interview Pops Up

British-Ghanaian rapper, producer, and pioneer Derek Safo, popularly known as Sway, revealed in a posthumously released interview that fame and celebrity status held zero value to him, emphasizing that true fulfilment lies in building a lasting legacy.

In an exclusive, extensive interview with NY DJ on BTM Afrika, the trailblazing artist opened up about his deliberate shift away from being in front of cameras and microphones to working behind the scenes as a producer and label executive.

“Celebrity doesn’t mean nothing to me; legacy means everything to me,“ Sway stated.

“To be able to help people and inspire more people is better than being on the street and people screaming your name or wanting pictures. These things are not important.“

Reflecting on his illustrious career—which includes historic milestones such as being the first unsigned act to perform on Jools Holland, the first unsigned rapper to win a MOBO Award, and the first UK rapper to secure a BET International Award—Sway explained that he originally never wanted to be a rapper at all.

“In the beginning, I didn’t even want it. I don’t like attention, I don’t like popularity. In the early days when I was rapping, I used to cover my face on my CD covers with the Union Jack or the Ghanaian flag so people wouldn’t recognize me on the street,“ he shared.

The legendary musician passed away on September 17, 2026, after battling ill health for a while. He died at the age of 44 years.

Before his death, the music architect was channelling his energy into nurturing the next generation of talent through Decipher Productions, drawing inspiration from legendary music masterminds like Dr Dre and Quincy Jones.
