“We Don’t Need An Official Group”: Ko-Jo Cue & Shaker Speak Up Despite Fan Demand

For years, hip-hop lovers across Ghana have referred to Ko-Jo Cue and Shaker as an official music group, often losing track of their individual solo careers due to their tight bond and undeniable synergy on tracks. However, during their appearance on BTM Afrika with NY DJ, the duo cleared the air once and for all.

When asked if they were ever tempted to formally brand themselves as a permanent, legally bound group, both rappers laughed off the idea, emphasizing that their individual identities are just as important as their collaborative power.

“I don’t think we ever had a conversation like that,” Shaker noted. “We were both individual artists before we came together to do this project. I don’t think we need to be an official group to be doing stuff together.”

Ko-Jo Cue echoed this sentiment, pointing out that whether fans view them as a duo or individual powerhouses collaborating, the music speaks for itself. Their seamless chemistry—built over a decade of friendship, basketball hangouts, and mutual respect—proves that great music doesn’t need corporate group titles to make a massive impact on the Ghanaian music scene.

Nine years after their critically acclaimed, culture-shifting debut project Pen & Paper—which birthed timeless anthems like “The Things We Do For Love“—the duo is returning with a mature, evolved sound.

Speaking exclusively on BTM Afrika, the artists opened up about what sparked the reunion. What started as an effortless studio session and a nostalgic ride listening to forgotten records in a car ultimately revived one of Ghana’s most formidable rap chemistries.

“PMP1 was almost 100% a hardcore rap project,” the duo shared during the interview. “This is still a rap project, but things have evolved. We are more mature now, the subject matter is elevated, and the soundscape is broader—though it remains fiercely hip-hop.”
