I don’t really know what you expect as you read this piece but I hope to make some sense as you read along. Forgive me if my arguments at times do not make “sense” but I know you might understand as times go on.
Among the many challenges the organizers of the Ghana Music Awards have faced in its fourteen years of existence, many Ghanaian musicians have on countless occasions chastised organizers for either sidelining them when they thought they deserved nominations or lost out on awards. This has led to many coining a new name out of Charter House to what is known as “Chacha House”.
Last year, the entire country was shocked as Herty Borngreat and Trigmatic won Best Collaboration of the year when many thought Asem and Kwabena Kwabena deserved it with their hit single Bye Bye. Guru on the other hand burst out as his hit song Lapaz Toyota was disqualified with the reason being that, it did not fall under that particular year.
Although some Ghanaian musicians could be right in assuming they deserved to win, I believe it is right they also consider the fact that most of the awards are based on votes.
I often times feel very sorry for most Ghanaian artists who have to cry their hearts out and express their anger and dissatisfaction via social media. Yes, it hurts when you are sidelined for an award you deserve but should the awards be the ultimate target of Ghanaian musicians? I don’t think so.
I wonder if you have ever asked yourself why these musicians rant all over for failing to pick up awards at the Ghana Music Awards. The reason is just simple; their objective for doing music is to win awards at Ghana Music Awards.
Again, do you know why some artists intentionally release songs at near dates to the awards? Your answer could be as good as mine.
In almost all discussions I have had with some of my friends, I have advised they rather take interest in making great music, play a lot of shows, work on avenues to make money and of course, if the awards come their way halleluiah.
I believe if musicians would concentrate on their work and make a good living out of that, we will hear very little of these usual complaints as we are experiencing even before nominations are released for this year’s edition.
That is also not supposed to mean organizers of the awards make unpardonable mistakes.
