Awal Mohammed, a member of the communications team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially retracted and apologized for comments made during a recent television appearance.
The controversy sparked following Awal’s appearance on the AM Show on Joy News. While engaged in a heated debate regarding the government’s stringent bail conditions, Awal used the term “junkies” to describe a section of Shatta Wale’s supporters, the Shatta Movement (SM).
Taking to social media to address the backlash, Awal clarified that the insult was a slip of the tongue during the pressure of live television.
”I want to clarify that I didn’t intend to insult or belittle anyone,” Awal stated. “The term was unnecessary, and I’m truly sorry for any offense caused.”
He further noted that the choice of words did not reflect his personal values, describing the incident as being “totally out of sync” with his character.
Awal emphasized his respect for the passion of music fans in Ghana, acknowledging that his critique of government policy should not have pivoted into an attack on a specific community of supporters.
”I respect the passion of fans and acknowledge that my choice of words was wrong,” he added, concluding with a plea for the public and the Shatta Movement to move forward positively.
