In a historic moment for music and culture, Grammy-winning icon Angélique Kidjo is poised to become the first African artist ever to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Angelique Kidjo joins a class of 35 trailblazers across film, music, television, and sports, including Miley Cyrus and Lyle Lovett, as an honoree in the “Recordings” category of the Walk of Fame.
This recognition cements her legacy as a trailblazer, uniting Africa and the world through genre-defying artistry that blends Afropop, jazz, gospel, world music, and beyond.
Her star celebrates not just individual achievement but a rich continental legacy: she is the first African artist to be honoured on this storied boulevard.
The honorees were selected by the Walk of Fame selection panel of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce from “hundreds” of nominations at a meeting on June 20. The selections were ratified by the Chamber’s board of directors on June 25.
Dates have not yet been scheduled for these star ceremonies. Recipients have two years to schedule star ceremonies from the date of selection before they expire. Upcoming star ceremonies are usually announced 10 days before dedication on the Walk of Fame’s official website.
Launching her musical journey in the early 1980s before moving to Paris, she’s known for iconic albums like Logozo, Djin Djin, and Mother Nature. Over the years, she has garnered five Grammys, the prestigious Polar Music Prize, honorary doctorates, and recognition from Time, BBC, and Forbes as a global cultural ambassador.
