When last did you hear about your favourite Ghanaian actor or actress and what was it about?
I dare say it wasn’t for an exceptional or even abysmal performance in a movie but a very controversial or somewhat useless statement obviously calculated at making headlines in the dailies or securing a spot on the blogs.
Yes!!! Aside the conventional controversial and somewhat useless utterances that guarantee your favourite actor or actress some space in the media, the very core (movie/film) for which you and I knew them has been relegated to the back and it funny enough, they seem not to realise it.
Taking interest in social media (which of course is good depending on what you are doing with it) and what has gradually come to stay as the red carpet culture in Ghana, most actors and actresses as I have observed seem more interested in the borrowed or hired outfits they would wear to ‘grace’ various occasions than their careers.
I mean what is the essence of walking a red carpet for nothing essential achieved? A doctor would obviously be known for his works at the hospital and so would a teacher be known for his inputs at the school but on what merit would the actor or actress walk the red carpet? Perhaps, a question for the gods.
The average Ghanaian actor or actress invests a lot in photoshoots and shares a little over 20 pictures in a month, a number way above the number of movies they probably have featured in since the commencement of their careers.
Once a very vibrant industry that the rest of Africa looked up to, one cannot hold shoulders high and say same of what exists today as it has fallen flat to its feet.
Perhaps, there is the need for the various industry players to wake up from their sleep as they seem to have slept for far too long a time.
Well, my article is not to rubbish the little efforts made by a few others but I believe the all hands on deck approach could help savage the dying industry that has seen our stars take up new jobs as Instagram Celebrities.
Could we also blame the power challenges the country was plunged into some years back? Just maybe.
Again, most producers channeled their energies and investments into other ventures they considered profitable as they complained the movies were no longer fetching them enough.
One thing worth considering again is the fact that most actors and actresses have also taken up the producer roles leaving very little to be produced.
The question remains, can we blame the actors and actresses for gradually turning Instagram models since there are no movies to star in?
