20-Year-Old Woman Dies During Stampede At Asake Concert In Kenya

Authorities in Kenya have confirmed to the BBC that one person has died following a crush at Nyayo Stadium during a concert headlined by Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake on Saturday.

Kenya police spokesman Michael Muchiri said the situation was later brought under control and the concert proceeded as planned.

“While the situation was later calmed down and fans were able to access the stadium with the concert progressing well, an unfortunate case of a 20-year-old woman being trampled to death near the entry point was recorded,” he told the BBC.

Police have not confirmed how many people were injured. Mr Muchiri declined to comment further, adding, “We had only this case of fatality.”

The family of the woman is now calling for justice. In a social media post tagging the concert organisers, Asake and co-headlining artist Gabzy, the victim’s mother wrote, “What happened to my child? Why her? I want justice for my child.”

In December 2022, a crush at a concert headlined by Asake at London’s Brixton Academy claimed at least two lives.

Asake is yet to comment on the recent incident in Kenya.
