Eight-time Grammy Award winner Usher has been presented with an honorary Doctor of Music by Berklee College of Music.
The Caught Up hitmaker was presented with the honour during the institution’s 2023 commencement ceremony held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Boston University’s Agganis Arena.
Usher was one of three others including four-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Roberta Flack and Sona Jobarteh, one of the foremost kora players in the world to be honoured at this year’s commencement ceremony.
These doctorate recipients were celebrated and recognized for their invaluable contributions to the worlds of music and philanthropy.
Past recipients from the college include Duke Ellington (the first, in 1971), Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones ’51, Celine Dion, B.B. King, Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, esperanza spalding B.M. ’05, Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Ringo Starr, Gloria Estefan, and John Legend.
Usher had the opportunity to address the graduating class.
