Video: Jidenna Lauds Ghana’s Decision Not To Sell Cocoa To Switzerland

Nigerian-American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer Jidenna Theodore Mobisson well known for his monster hit single Classic Man has a word for African leaders.

The musician would want to see African leaders take charge of their natural resources, make good use of them to their own benefit than sell them to European countries, a practice he describes as a form of neocolonialism.

In a new video shared online, Jidenna applauded Ghana’s decision not to sell cocoa beans, one of its top exports to Switzerland and other European countries.

He described the decision as a good one and called on other African countries to emulate the same not only with cocoa but all other natural resources including cobalt.

He said;

“It’s a day to celebrate. I don’t know if you heard but Ghana decided not to export cocoa to Switzerland and all the European nations that have been caking off the chocolate industry. Globally, the chocolate industry is 102 Billion Dollars but Ghana sees 2 Billion Dollars and then it creates a legacy that Swiss chocolates are the best … My prayer is that Ghana is not the first and only country to do this. We need to do the same thing that OPEC does with Oil.”

A year ago, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo became the first African leader to be invited in about 60 years on a state visit to Switzerland. But his visit may not have gone as his host would wish as he announced that his country will soon end the process of selling cocoa beans (a commodity for which Ghana happens to be the second-largest producer in the world after neighbours the Ivory Coast) to trade partners for onward value addition.

Switzerland, a great manufacturer of chocolates, buys its cocoa from the two West African neighbours although Ghana is Switzerland’s biggest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.

Akufo-Addo’s statement to the Federal Council of Switzerland is seen by many pro-African interest observers as well as Pan-Africanists as a possible route through which Africa can win on trade on the global scene.
