‘Straight Outta Compton’ Tops Box Office Again, Other New Releases Fall Flat

For the second consecutive week, N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” dominated the American box office again. With this weekend’s three new releases falling flat, the rap group movie rose with approximately $26.8 million.

After earning a satisfying $60.2 million in its domestic debut last weekend, “Compton” declined around 56 percent. “The film has clearly captured the imagination of moviegoers,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. “Even if it falls over 50 percent this weekend, it will still do close to $30 million – which would be a good opening weekend for a film opening in August.”

“Compton” garnered around $111.5 million globally through this weekend, marking Universal’s 13th weekend atop the North American box office. Universal now has seven titles that have passed $100 million domestically this year, including its latest comedy movie “Trainwreck“.

Tom Cruise‘s “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” performed very well, placing at number two in its fourth weekend. The movie added an estimated $11.7 million for a domestic total of $158 million. It was also successful in international box office, grossing $25.2 million for a global total of $438.6 million.

Sinister 2” failed to top this weekend’s box office, coming behind “Rogue Nation” with an estimated $10.6 million. The horror movie couldn’t defeat its predecessor, “Sinister“, which debuted to $18 million in October 2012 and grossed $77.7 million worldwide.

Another new release was “Hitman: Agent 47” which launched to approximately $8.2 million from 3,261domestic theaters. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” was able to secure the fifth position in its second outing, earning around $7.4 million.
