She may be courting controvery for herself especially looking at the hypocritical society we find ourselves; a society where people believe musicians who do other genres except Gospel are evil doers and have no right to come close to the dwellings of Gospel musicians (who at times perpetuate more evil than we even think).
On several occasions, Ghanaian Gospel musicians have been chastised for either recording, associating with or singing the songs from secular musicians. Do you remember what happened when recorded Herty Borngreat with Trigmatic? What about Lady Prempeh, Richie and Asem? I’m sure the next one to make news will be Opanka’s new track with Gifty Osei.
The last of which became a major news item on most blogs was when Sonnie Badu and wife danced to Kwabena Kwabena’s adult music at their wedding ceremony in London
Well, if you care to know, Gospel musician Obaapa Christy formerly known as Christiana Love says she sometimes take inspiration from secular acts such as Samini, Kwaw Kese, Kwabena Kwabena, Daddy Lumba, Sarkodie and many others. (Note, She didn’t mention any Gospel musician).
The musician put people in awe as she did her rendition of Daddy Lumba’s chart-topping song, ‘Yentie Obiaa’ live on Accra based Atinka FM last Tuesday.
According to her, the lyrical content of a song is what matters most to her hence she finds nothing wrong with some secular songs unlike others do.
“Many of these so-called secular musicians offer inspiration and direction to people; some even offer fruitful advise to the depressed in society”- She is quoted as saying.
She also disclosed she admires and enjoys Samini, Kwaw Kese, Kwabena Kwabena, Daddy Lumba, Sarkodie simply because of dedication and commitment to their work.
“I sometimes take inspiration from them; I enjoy Samini’s music as well as his energetic stage performances,” the ‘No fears’ hit singer told her host.
“If you want to improve your music career, you should be selective; you must learn from different artistes particularly, their stage performances and the quality they add to the various compositions,” she said.
