Musicians must consider themselves as brands and their music, products to always stay relevant – Okyeame Kwame
Ghana’s Best Rapper Alive (BRA), Kwame Nsiah Appau often referred to in the Ghanaian showbiz industry as Okyeame Kwame has thrown a free piece of advice to upcoming and already established musicians on how to stay relevant in the ever-changing music industry.
Contributing to discussions on “how to remain relevant in the Ghanaian showbiz industry” on the Kapital Entertainment Unplugged Show on Kapital Radio over the weekend, Okyeame Kwame whose music career spans over a decade and continues to remain relevant unlike many he started with explained it was time the musician considered his music as a product and his personality a brand.
Explaining his point, the CEO of One Mic Entertainment stated that just as lots of brands worldwide had products that people could easily associate with, it was necessary Ghanaian musicians considered themselves as brands and their works as products.
He further stated that, the appearance and demeanour of the artist, which he referred to as brand must marry with the kind of music (product) so as to avoid any conflict.
“If you are a musician who does hard-core hiphop, rap music and seem to portray violence in your songs, there is a particular expectation of you with regards to appearance and so should you be seen in a suits and ties as if you were the head of corporate Ghana, you should know there is a disconnection and that will have effects on you.”
He continued to state that, musicians could stay relevant by their brands or products at one point in their careers citing Amakye Dede and Daddy Lumba. He said, Amakye Dede has for the past years not released any song (product) but was enjoying because of the brand he created and so was Daddy Lumba who even until his latest album was surviving because of his products that were available.
Okyeame Kwame therefore advised musicians to learn more into their craft so as to stay relevant and make a good living.
