Legendary South African Musician Doc Shebeleza Has Died

Legendary Kwaito musician Doc Shebeleza, born Victor Bogopane, has died at age 51.

The renowned businessman and Kwaito veteran had been battling health issues for several years.

On 2 December 2024, Doc Shebeleza shared with the public that he had undergone successful surgery, with plans for a second operation scheduled for 2 February 2025.

Sadly, his family confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death on Thursday morning, January 9, 2025.

His daughter, Segaetsho, confirmed the news saying;

“Yes, I can confirm that he passed away this morning,” she said.

Segaetsho also mentioned that the family would release an official press statement.

Doc Shebeleza, a prominent figure in the Kwaito music scene, first gained recognition in 1995 with his debut album, Shebeleza, which included the hit song Ghets Ghetsa.

He followed this with the S’kumfete album, which included the popular title track.

Over the years, Doc Shebeleza released three more albums: Tiger(1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).

His influence on the kwaito genre was profound, inspiring artists such as Mandoza, Mapaputsi and many others.

In later years, Shebeleza devoted himself to philanthropy through his organisation Amaha, working to uplift his fellow artists.

His legacy was underscored by the 2014 hit song Doc Shebeleza by Cassper Nyovest. The track not only became a chart-topping success but also served as a testament to Shebeleza’s influence across generations.

His music continues to be celebrated by Kwaito fans and remains a staple of South African musical history.
