“Justice League” proved to be a disappointment. Many estimated that the DC film would make around $110 million at domestic box office in its opening weekend, but it earned only $93.8 million. Worldwide grossing made a lot more than its domestic box office with $185 million.
However, the superhero team-up film has the lowest opening weekend for films set in DC Extended Universe. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” earned $116M, “Suicide Squad” made $133.7M, “Man of Steel” grossed $128.9M, and “Wonder Woman” made $103.3M. Analysts believe that given the fact that holiday season is approaching, the domestic run could go to $250M and could be boosted up to around $700M worldwide. The result is decent, but after spending $300M for the film’s production and distribution costs, Warner Bros. won’t have much profit.
Second place of the box office was owned by family film “Wonder” with $27.5 million. The film, which reportedly cost $20M, proved to be in favor of critics, who gave it 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. The PG-rated film is adapted from R.J. Palacio’s book about a child with Treacher Collins Syndrome.
Meanwhile, “Thor: Ragnarok” successfully overshadowed “Justice League” in box office. The God of Thunder film still roamed at the domestic box office, dropping two slots to the third place with $21.7 million domestically in its third weekend. “Ragnarok” continued to impress audience in North America with its $738.1 million worldwide revenue, excellent critical reception and 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s total revenue topped “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ($714M) and “Doctor Strange” ($678M) globally, making it the ninth Marvel Cinematic Universe title to pass $700 million.
“Daddy’s Home 2” took the fourth place with $14.4 million, dropping 50% from its opening weekend. Its ten-day domestic total is $50.5 million, $10 million less than its reported $69 million cost. On the other hand, “Murder on the Orient Express” went to the fifth place with $13.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $51.7 million and dropping 52% from its opening week. The film collected around $148.2 million internationally, which pretty much covers its reported $55M production cost.
