The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2022 is over and a well-deserved Artist of the Year Award winner KiDi (a Lynx Entertainment signed artist) has to fight a recurrent narrative that seeks to rub him off his hard work.
Often, artists signed to Ghana’s most established record label, Lynx Entertainment are ‘discredited’ for their hard work due to a fallacy that has long has festered for whatever reason.
The narrative suggests these artists (signed to Lynx Entertainment) win awards at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards because their label boss Richie Mensah is a board member of the awards scheme.
This begs a number of questions including but not limited to; Is Richie Mensah truly a board member of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards? Has he ever been a board member? What are his influences on the awards scheme?
Well, we sought to find out answers to these questions and chanced on a video interview granted by the label executive back in 2021 in which he answers these questions.
As an added effort, we reached out to the appropriate quarters that corroborated his assertions.
In the interview with Doreen Avio, Richie Mensah rebuts allegations that he is a board member of the VGMAs.
“I am not on the VGMA board. I have been on it once in my life and that was in 2014. Let me explain what I was told when the year I was called to be on the board. You’re not allowed to be on the board if you have an affiliation with anyone who is nominated or going to be nominated. In the year 2013, Lynx didn’t release any artist so, in 2014, they called me on the board. The years after, it’s been Kuami and KiDi so I’ve not been invited again,” he said.
Richie Mensah however explained why he believes a lot of people believe he is a part of the board.
Lynx Entertainment served as and continues to serve as home to a number of incredible talents including Asem, Zigi, Irene Logan, Eazzy, OJ Blaq, KiDi, Kuami Eugene, Boijake, MzVee, Dope Nation, DJ Vyrusky and many others.
