Guest Blog: Which Stands Tall – National Chocolate Day or Valentine’s Day?
The origins of Valentine’s Day dates back to ancient Rome, fast forward to the 21st century, Val’s Day as it is commonly referred to has become an event marked across the world on the 14th of February annually.
The day is set aside to express and show love in whichever way that people find appropriate.
The government of Ghana in 2007 chose to re-brand this day to what will become known as National Chocolate Day.
The main aim of this was to promote made in Ghana cocoa products, but I honestly think this day hasn’t been able to stand tall nor fulfill its purpose as the latter still stands.
Moving through town and paying attention to all publicity being made, only a handful seem to be marking the day as national chocolate day and this raises questions on our ability to sell or make made in Ghana products attractive to ourselves and the world at large.
Ghana produces one of the finest chocolate products that I have ever tasted and can only be compared to the best chocolate produced from any part of the world, yet a lot of folks would prefer other imported brands to our Golden Tree.
Must this be a typical issue of branding or lack of appreciation for our own? Being honest to ourselves, our national bodies in charge of tourism hasn’t done enough to promote the Ghanaian Chocolate brand.
Moving forward, suffering brands like our very own locally made chocolates should be promoted more during national events, there could even be a national event or carnival crafted around chocolate to be promoted alongside our creative art industry. A lot of ideas needs to be brought aboard to make this day stand its intended purpose.
