Finally! Run DMC to be honoured with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

Run DMC’s first ever Grammy will be a first for all of rap.

The iconic hip hop group are to be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Grammys.

Joseph ‘Run’ Simmons, Darryl ‘D.M.C.’ McDaniels, and the late Jason ‘Jam Master Jay’ Mizell will become the first ever rap artists to be honoured.

The 51-year-old Reverend Run tweeted his delight on Wednesday when he received the news.

‘I just got a call from the Grammys!! They shocked me!! We’re the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful!. God is good!!!’ he wrote.

‘I’m so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy!’

Jam Master Jay joins the list of artists to be named posthumously, having been shot dead in New York in 2002 at the age of 37.

‘Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees,’ Academy president Neil Portnow said

‘Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.’

The award is just the latest in a long line of firsts for the trio, including first to have a No 1 R&B charting rap album; first rap artist with a Top 10 pop charting rap album; first rap act to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine; and the first rap act to make a video appearance on MTV.
