Whether you’re a native New Yorker, recently moved to one of the New York apartments, or you’re just visiting, there are many great ways to experience autumn in this state. When it comes to fall colour, the foliage truly knocks it out of the park and you’ll find plenty of fall activities to enjoy too.
Take the Scenic Olympic Trail Drive
The Adirondack Mountains are the largest natural wilderness region in the eastern part of the country and provide some of the best leaf-peeping with maple, birch, oak, and beech trees bursting with golden yellows, fiery reds, and brilliant orange hues.
Take a drive on the 170-mile Olympic Trail that links Lake Ontario to Lake Champlain for some of the best. The colour begins to pop around mid-September at higher elevations while the first half of October is best for lower areas around the lakes. As Country Living magazine noted, Saranac Lake is an especially scenic village in this region with many lakes, hiking trails, and breathtaking colours.
Base Yourself In New Paltz
The Shawangunk Mountains, referred to as “The Gunks” by the locals, are a long ridge that lies west of the town of New Paltz, offering more waterfalls, cliffs, and trails than just about anywhere else in New York. Base yourself in the picturesque town in southeast Ulster County to enjoy them all.
While you’re here you can visit Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park with hiking trails, horseback riding paths, and stunning panoramic views. Or, pick up some farm fresh apples at Dressel Farm and enjoy some wine tasting at Robibero Family Vineyards which also offers live music on Saturdays.
Pick Pumpkins, Apples and More in Saratoga Springs
One of the most popular destinations for New Yorkers, Saratoga Springs has drawn visitors for centuries thanks to its natural mineral springs. It also offers a ton of fun in the fall, with farmer’s markets, foliage hikes, corn mazes, and apple picking.
The Saratoga Fall Festival is held downtown, usually over the weekend before Halloween, offering a pumpkin hunt, a costumed fun run, live entertainment, and more. Visitors can also pick up pumpkins for carving at Sunnyside Gardens and go apple picking at numerous orchards like Saratoga Apple, Bowman Orchards, and Kovarovic Orchard.
Fall Festivities in the Hamptons
The Hamptons aren’t just a place to go for a day at the beach, there is plenty of fall fun here. Fairview Farm in Bridgehampton offers a fresh produce stand, homemade pies, and a corn maze that covers eight acres. In Riverhead, take part in Harbes Orchard’s Annual Apple Harvest, where you can make your way through a corn maze, pick apples, and enjoy live music.
A Stay at Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid
One of the best getaways you can enjoy in New York during the fall can be found in Lake Placid at Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa. It’s often ranked among the top spots in the country when it comes to autumn foliage, with sunny yellows, vibrant oranges, and scarlet reds.
A luxury resort that sits right on the lake, this is also a great time to paddle out onto the water in a rowboat, kayak, or canoe, which are complimentary for guests. The resort also hosts a fabulous spa for indulging in the latest custom treatments and a restaurant with a menu of mouthwatering dishes made from locally sourced ingredients.
