American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress Ciara Princess Wilson has been granted Beninese citizenship after tracing her ancestry to the West African country.
On Saturday, July 26, 2025, she received her certificate of Beninese citizenship, officially sealing her membership in the national community.
The symbolic ceremony was held in the presence of several members of the government and Beninese personalities, including Mr. Yvon DETCHENOU, Guardian of the Seals, Minister of Justice and Legislation, Mr. Babalola Jean-Michel H. ABIMBOLA, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Arts, Mr. Olushegun ADJADI BAKARI, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sindé CHEKETE, General Manager of Benin Tourism, and Mrs. Claude Borna, General Manager of the Semè City Development Agency.
This initiative embodies Benin’s willingness to assume its historical responsibility, reconnect with its children scattered around the world, and make its territory a land of welcome, memory, and future.
Ahead of the ceremony, Ciara toured some of the historic sites of the country, including the historic city of Ouidah, where she discovered the landmark steps of the Slave Road to the Gate of No Return.
A highlight of her stay in Benin, marked by a deep connection to his roots, between emotion, collection and legacy, she had a profound experience of getting back to basics.
