As the Ghanaian movie industry continues to suffer a nose dive, others elsewhere are keeping their homes together securing Oscar nominations.
Yes!! The nominees list for the 2018 Oscars have been announced and among them is Lebanese produced film “The Insult”. It grabbed a nomination together with A Fantastic Woman (Chile), Loveless (Russia), On Body And Soul (Hungary) and The Square (Sweden).
Premiering in Lebanon in early fall 2017, “The Insult” addresses the country’s sensitive sectarian issues, aggravated by its 15-year-long Civil War.
Set in modern day Beirut, the movie follows a dispute between a Christian mechanic and a Palestinian foreman as it develops from a petty personal fight into an explosive national debate, unleashing old war wounds.
“The Insult” was widely praised in Lebanon, but the reputation of Doueiri himself was marred by a highly publicized legal issue shortly before the film’s release, when the French-Lebanese director was sent to military court for questioning on the grounds that his 2012 film “The Attack” was shot in Israel.
Lebanon and Israel remain officially at war and it is illegal for Lebanese citizens to visit the Jewish state or to do business with Israelis.
Doueiri was released shortly following his questioning in court, and “The Insult” was later submitted by Lebanon’s Culture Ministry as the country’s candidate for the Foreign Language Oscar.
The 90th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will honor the best films of 2017 and will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California at 5:00 p.m. PST on March 4, 2018.
The ceremony will take place after its usual late-February date to avoid conflicting with the 2018 Winter Olympics. During the ceremony, AMPAS will present Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories. The ceremony will be televised in the United States by ABC, produced by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd and directed by Glenn Weiss.
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will host for a second consecutive year, making Kimmel the first person to host back-to-back ceremonies since Billy Crystal in 1997 and 1998.
